Acai Berry In Detail

The Acai Berry Legend
Long ago there was an Amazon girl named Iaca who was the daughter of the Indian tribe’s chief. Food was very scarce, so her father, whose name was Itaki, ordered all newborn children to be sacrificed.Sadly, when Iaca bore a child, the chief made sure his orders were carried out. Iaca mourned the death of her baby for many days and nights, until, one night with a full moon, she heard a child crying.

As she walked outside, she saw her daughter next to a beautiful palm tree covered in dark purple fruit. She ran to her daughter and held her close.
Early the next morning her dead body was found holding the tree. Her dark eyes were staring towards the top of the palm tree. Itaki ordered the tribe to harvest the fruit, which satisfied their hunger and renewed their energy. He lifted his harsh order to sacrifice the newborn children and decreed that the fruit would be named after his daughter (acai is “Iaca” spelled backwards).

From that day the tribe grew and flourished under the acai tree.

History of the Acai Berry

The Açaí berry (pronounced ah–sigh–ee) was first introduced to the western world in the 1990’s but was actually harvested by the native people of the Amazon for hundreds of years. It is known by the natives as “içá-çai”, which means “fruit that cries”. Native healers have long used it for curing common ailments and as part of their diet for hundreds of years.

Acai Berry’s recent attention is largely due to bestselling author and anti-aging expert Dr. Nicholas Perricone book “The Perricone Promise” Perricone claimed the berry to be the “Number one super food in the world” gaining media attention which in turn skyrocketed its popularity.

What is the Acai Berry?

The berry itself is round, the size of a blueberry and a deep purple in colour when full-grown.  The berry is made up of 10% of the fruit and the other 90% is made up of the seed or pit. The flavour has been described as a blend of berries and dark chocolate.

How is the Acai Berry harvested?
In the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil grows a towering palm tree called the acai palm. The palm  has a long thin trunk up to 25m high with a group of branches at the top which two times a year is packed with hundreds of berries, producing about 20 kg of fruit each year.

Traditionally the acai berries were hand picked by shimmying up the tree and cutting the branches, now days the berry is mass produced, with only a 24 hour life span in which the properties of the juice are still active.
The berry is put through a process that separates the pulp from the seed to produce a thick, edible puree. Depending on where it’s going, the acai may also be turned into juice, pulp, dried, or freeze dried into powder.
