Bloating



Bloating?

Bloating and the ‘emission of gas’ is actually a normal healthy process, but can also be uncomfortable, awkward and even debilitating.

There are numerous possible causes and we will run through a few:

Lactose Intolerance

An inability to breakdown and digest milk and some soft cheeses can create both bloating and often diarrhea too. Try reducing your milk intake and see if things improve. Your GP may be able to refer you for a Hydrogen Breath Test which is a non invasive test for this food intolerance.

Irritable Bowel syndrome

A condition often related to stress which is frequently diagnosed by doctors when all else seems to be normal with the gut. Dietitians have found that modifying the type of fiber you consume can make a difference – Example: Try reducing hard to break down fibres – often referred to as roughage – like seeds and pips and possibly even some hard whole grains*.

Fibre

Fibre is essential, but introducing too much fibrous foods too fast can cause some tummy upset. Incorporate high fibre foods like bran cereals and veggies gradually into your diet.

Fructose Malabsorbtion

Do apples or onions exacerbate your bloating? You may have Fructose Malabsorbtion – here again, you can get a Hydrogen Breath Test to make a clear diagnosis.
