Depression and St Johns Wort |
|
Hypericum is known world wide as an effective natural antidepressant. Evidence, however indicates that Hypericum does have an effect on some prescribed medications. This means that we should use Hypericum sensibly and with caution, not abandon it. So what is depression? It is customary to feel gloomy or sad some of the time but people who experience depression have severe and prolonged sadness. Symptoms may include insomnia, weight loss, restlessness and a lack of interest in things you once enjoyed. It is wise to speak to your health care practitioner if you feel you may suffer from depression to discuss all of the available options. One of the management options may include Hypericum. Hypericum, also known as St Johns Wort, is a small plant with yellow flowers. It is said to flower on June 24, the birthday of St John the Baptist. Hypericum has been shown to work effectively as a natural antidepressant. It is recommended primarily in cases of mild to moderate depression. World wide sales of Hypericum have made it one of the most widely used herbs. In some European countries it must be prescribed by a Doctor but in Australia we are lucky enough to be able to buy it over the counter without a medical script. It must be registered by the Australian Therapeutic Goods association to ensure quality and safety. Other uses include relief of anxiety, mood swings, headaches, sciatica and fatigue. Hypericum has also shown some antiviral activities so it may be beneficial in the relief of symptoms of flu's and the Herpes Simplex virus. Topically Hypericum is used for inflammation, bruises and burns. Hypericum contains many active constituents including hypericin, pseudohypericin, quercetin, hypeforin, sterol, bioflavanoids and essential oils. These constituents are believed to be effective in inhibiting the uptake system of serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine. This process has a powerful antidepressant action. Hypericum must however be used with caution as it does interact with some medications. Please consult your health care practitioner for futher advice.
