The toothbrush is subject to inevitable bacterial contamination, determined by contact with micro-organisms found in the mouth. It can cause mouth disease including tooth decay and other infections. The head of the toothbrush, due to its complex structure, is particularly susceptible to more substantial contamination leading to a breeding ground for a variety of germs. Bacteria, viruses and fungi can breed in environments that are warm and moist. When bacteria from the mouth are transferred to the toothbrush following brushing, they can survive and multiply, leaving an infective charge for the next use. "In addition to daily wear and tear a toothbrush goes through, it can become contaminated with bacteria, blood, saliva, toothpaste and excess water", says Dr Dion Shapiro, prominent Sydney based Dentist. Dr Shapiro says "to optimise mouth and toothbrush health, allow the toothbrush to air dry; change toothbrush every 3 months or when sick; store toothbrush in an open area to avoid bacteria being trapped." While there are many toothbrushes available there isn't one single design that has been shown to be any better at cleaning than another. Toothbrushes should be chosen by which feels more comfortable in the mouth. Brushing is essential for everyone. Brushing cleans the inside, outside and biting surfaces of the teeth. Only brushing and flossing will remove the plaque (bacteria) that causes decay, gingivitis, periodontitis and bad breath. There have been no radical innovations in toothbrush design since the introduction of the nylon bristle in the 1950's. A range of toothbrushes and oral hygiene accessories with silver heads are now available - the most significant dental advancement of the millennium. In ancient times silver spheres were used to purify drinking water. This century-old concept, applied to modern technology, was the foundation of the antibacterial range of toothbrushes with its bristles imbedded in the unique pure Silver-Plated head. On contact with water, the silver head releases active ions that reduce the bacterial charge, which otherwise would remain and cultivate on traditional toothbrushes. This is an antibacterial process which is natural and continuous. "The silver toothbrush products addresses the problem of bacteria on toothbrushes using nature's own bacteria fighter, Silver", says Dr Dion Shapiro. Clinical studies examined the residual microbic contamination by Streptococcus Mutans (the most significant cavity-forming micro-organism), after daily use comparing a traditional nylon toothbrush, to a silver toothbrush.
