Natural Solutions to Nappy Rash
Nappy rash is one of the most common complaints in babies. It appears as blotchy, red and irritated skin around the nappy area, and if left untreated can progress quickly into painful blisters or ulcers. Here are some common causes of nappy rash, and some handy tips for treating it naturally.

Causes of Nappy Rash include:
  • wearing synthetic materials that do not breathe well, causing the skin to sweat
  • inadequate nappy washing (leaving residues of urine or stool on the fabric)
  • acidic stools (possibly from too high fruit juice intake)
  • diarrhoea
  • systemic candida/thrush infections can exacerbate nappy rash

Tips for treating nappy rash naturally:
  • Expose your baby's skin to warm dry air for a few hours a day, giving it a chance to breathe and heal
  • Keep the nappy area dry (nappy products containing zinc can help to keep the skin dry)
  • Apply organic egg whites to the affected areas and allow to air dry to protect the skin
  • Avoid talcum powders and any creams with synthetic ingredients such as perfumes and preservatives as they will worsen nappy rash
  • Creams containing herbs such as Calendula, Chamomile, St John's Wort (Hypericum) and Nettle give relief from itching and pain.
  • Add a little vinegar to your rinse water when cleaning reusable nappies, to neutralise the acidity and prevent skin irritation
  • Check for allergies to laundry products or skin products
